City: Sacramento Price Range: Expensive Cuisine: California, French, Italian Special Features: Business Lunch, Great Desserts, Lunch, Notable Chef, Notable Wine List, Outdoor Dining, Romantic With a setting of white walls, rich–colored fish paintings and vintage-style wicker chairs there is a distinct Hamptonesque feel when you sit down at the renowned Waterboy Restaurant. Situated on a corner Capitol Avenue—versus an ocean-view bungalow in Long Island—this restaurant is known for its progressive use of local seasonal ingredients interwoven into northern Italian and southern French dishes. The restaurant mills with locals entertaining business clients, catching up with friends, wine tasting or simply out enjoying a long leisurely lunch. Soft contemporary jazz plays in the background and servers efficiently set down appetizer platters of crostini served with preserved tomato or veal sweetbreads. A lunch favorite is its Waterboy deluxe burger—a gourmet version of a messy bacon cheeseburger—served with Niman Ranch ground beef, cheddar cheese and applewood bacon. At dinner, entrees include tender and flavorful braised Niman Ranch pork and Manilla clams or a pan roasted duck breast served with brown butter gnocchi. It may not be the Hamptons, but go ahead and put on your white linen pants and request the wine list. Cindy Arora
