If the only sandwich you’ve ever eaten is a traditional deli-style sandwich, it’s time to rock your gastronomic world with Huong Lan’s exuberantly flavored banh mi, or Vietnamese sandwiches. Composed on an airy, crusty, delicate French roll, the sandwiches are filled with the meat of your choice (selections range from meatball and sardine to grilled pork, shredded chicken and head cheese), white onions, cilantro, jalapeno slices and a yummy daikon-carrot slaw tossed in a tangy sweet-sour dressing. Take a bite, and your palate is bombarded with fresh, exhilarating flavors—you’ll love the pleasing crunchiness, the just-the-right-amount of meatiness, and that thrilling punch from the jalapenos that lingers long after you’ve devoured the banh mi. Sort of like a salad inside a roll, this is one sandwich that won’t weigh you down—instead, it will buoy your palate and your spirits. Huong Lan also offers some of the best pho (a traditional, broth-based Vietnamese soup containing thinly sliced meat and noodles) we’ve tried in the region. While you wait for your meal, check out the shop’s extensive collection of pre-wrapped take-out items like the pretty spring rolls, grilled chicken and meat-filled buns, as well as lots of interesting condiments and candies. If you bring the kids, we’ve found that the staff will kindly prepare a simple noodle soup for them, minus the usual accoutrements. Huong Lan offers up a culinary adventure for the whole family. — Kira O'Donnell
