City: Fair Oaks Price Range: Inexpensive Cuisine: American Special Features: Breakfast, Dog Friendly, Free Internet, Hot Spot, Kid-Friendly, Lunch, Outdoor Dining, Take-Out, View A beloved neighborhood gathering spot, Fair Oaks Coffee House & Deli offers up straightforward, nurturing food that will appeal to the whole family. Facing Old Town Fair Oaks’ pretty central square, the small establishment has worn concrete floors, a funky array of tables (one is composed of a large plank resting over two barrels) and shelving against the back wall brimming with books of all kinds, affixed with a sign which says “Borrow, share, and enjoy.” Chickens cluck and preen contentedly outside, ambling around the deli’s colorful, tile-flecked patio tables. Early risers can get a custom espresso drink with one of the deli’s huge muffins or scones, and for a more substantial breakfast, order the two-egg omelette or build-your-own breakfast burrito. Lunch items include a plethora of sandwiches, including the terrific (and warm) “Big Turkey Panini,” filled with turkey, bacon, melted Swiss cheese and avocado with a basil aioli; and the meatless “Village Veggie,” a satisfying rib-sticker featuring Swiss cheese and a medley of vegetables. Other not-to-miss selections are the housemade lasagna and the hearty soups. This is a wonderful place to visit on the way to a picnic: the food comes out quickly, and you’ll find everything you need—from potato salad and bottled beverages to fresh-baked cookies—to furnish a first-rate casual lunch. — Kira O'Donnell |
