Burgers and Brew by Crepeville - Davis403 Third St. City: Davis Price Range: Inexpensive Cuisine: American, Hamburgers, Sandwiches Special Features: Good for Groups, Hot Spot, Kid-Friendly, Late-Night Dining, Lunch, Outdoor Dining If you’re in Davis and craving a burger, head directly to Third and C streets, where you’ll find some of the best hamburgers and sandwiches in town. Located on a shady, picturesque corner of the quaint downtown, Burgers and Brew offers its hoards of fans a pretty compelling selection, from the unadorned half-pound Niman Ranch hamburger and mushroom-onion cheeseburger to the smoked tofu burger (a popular choice in this eclectic university town). Pepper aficionados will devour the bacon and jalapeño cheeseburger, stacked on an excellent Village Bakery bun with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion slices and melted pepper Jack cheese. Super spicy, this is one burger that requires a generous quantity of beer to accompany it. (Try the Boont Amber Ale or Newcastle Brown Ale.) Aside from the great burgers, the kitchen also plates up some yummy sandwiches (try the turkey avocado melt on sourdough bread), hot dogs and hot links, and a handful of soups and salads. The clam chowder is very tasty. We especially liked the black pepper-flecked, extra-crispy fries, though adventurous eaters may want to go for the roasted garlic fries or chili fries. This busy little establishment has a beautiful outdoor porch dining area, and also offers several sidewalk tables in addition to its dimly lit, crowded inside dining room. Arrive early, especially for lunch, as the line forms quickly. — Kira O'Donnell |
