Aioli Bodega Espanola1800 L St. City: Sacramento Price Range: Moderate Cuisine: Spanish / Tapas Special Features: Business Lunch, Great Desserts, Live Music, Lunch, Open Kitchen, Outdoor Dining, Romantic, Small Plates Aioli Bodega Espanola has been serving its straightforward and flirty foods from the South of Spain for 13 years. The spacious dining room twinkles with soft lights, a siren call for romantics who want to splurge on a bottle of Spanish red wine, order a paella valenciana—made with saffron rice, shrimp, seafood, chicken and pork spareribs—while swaying to live flamenco music. It’s a reputable date spot that has resulted in a number of weddings through the years. But it’s also a favorite amongst locals who come here for birthday parties, girls’ night out, anniversaries and plenty of lunch meetings by local politicos. The food is pura Espana, with tapas calientes—such as bavette de boeuf — a seared skirt steak — paella for two and house specials that include marinated rabbit and braised lamb shanks. The restaurant is informal and welcoming despite its upscale appearance. Order el borracho (the drunk) for dessert and get a knowing smile from the server. Cindy Arora |
